Sexual Harassment in the Academy: A Crowdsource Survey - McGill's input

Dr. Karen Kelsky who runs the well-known site "The Professor is In" created an extensively crowd-sourced spreadsheet of sexual harassment in universities and colleges (there are even some high schools mentioned on the spreadsheet).

Trigger warning. You can read the spreadsheet in it's entirety here. It makes for brutal and very uncomfortable reading, enough to make your skin crawl and it will probably never come back. There are about six  McGill entries as well and it involves MA supervisors, department chairs, tenured professors and  administrators.

There are stories about profs wanting to "receive more hospitality" meeting students at bars, going out to films and then "expecting more", pressing breasts, handing out suggestive remarks like "How badly do you want it?" (Student Life and Learning) , 60-something profs hitting on 18 year old undergrads offering to take them on vacation and "show them a good time" and how he likes "curvaceous women"  (Food Chemistry), invitations to summer homes and off-topic emails that become increasingly suggestive , how he was a friend of Sting's (Daniel Levitin), undergrad groped and kissed by a professor in his office (Communications).

Go to the top of column "F" and you'll see an arrow on the right-hand side to sort the column alphabetically. Sort it alphabetically  A--->Z and then you can scroll down to see all the McGill entries in one place that have been named as "McGill".

Given that many names of institutions, discipline and departments on the 2400+ separate entries  spreadsheet have been deliberately withheld by the posters, no doubt there are probably even more McGill entries on the database which we'll never know about.

This was posted on ratemyprofessor.com for Mark Brawley a few days ago but was yanked off yesterday.

1.0 rating (out of 5.0)
A mediocre mind plus an enormous ego (hubris): makes for a bad combination.

These profs are all married (with the exception of Ibrahim Fekry in Islamic Studies) - usually whenever something is going wrong in their marriage, marriage is on the rocks, no more sex, wife had an accident, he's now impotent etc. the first place these guys look towards is students, when they should be looking towards therapists.

To be fair ratemyprofessor.com also had reviews about Rex Brynen mentioning his habits and history with harassing female students, which were also quickly taken down. It’s a worthless site.

Not about any particular McGill profs but touches on sexual harassment and why some victims never come forward.

I'm hearing way too many #metoo stories about students complaining about profs stalking them, probably because of that new Weinstein flick that's generating serious buzz at Sundance right now.
So, I'm opening it up to the board here.
Please define what constitutes stalking-like behavior? How do you know it's real? Just because the student feels some discomfort? Could it not be an over-active imagination or mental state?

Stalking behavior:
Following someone in public without the person's knowledge. Searching for private information about someone through third parties or in secret. Looking through someone's window at night. Cam spying. Pretending to be someone else to communicate with the target online.

The “without knowledge and permission” part.
It’s hellish being to object of someone’s fixation. Doubly so if it is a male prof because he can use his position as a prof and an older guy to discredit you completely and make it out that you have a mental illness or even worse, turn the story around completely so that you were stalking him.

Kipling
A lot of sexual harassers who have been stalking their victims, when outed use the "I wasn't stalking her, she was stalking me" excuse. I had a co-hort who in hindsight was a bit of a creep and sexual harasser but back then, we called it being a cad.
He became a big shot prof and then the litany of sexual harassment claims started coming out a few years ago against him. Suddenly this poor fella was this innocent bystander who seemed to have throngs of female stalkers who were out to destroy him. Not true, I saw him operate, it doesn't get any sleazier or creepier than him.

Brynen, Brawley, Levitin, Ibrahim all need to go fuck themselves.

More ratemyprofessor reviews that went up in the last few days since the semester ended. Posting them here before they are taken down on the original website:

1) He(Brawley) is notorious for giving bad grades for students who do not agree with his views. Although he is a lecturer with mediocre talent who takes a lot of old ideas and puts them into a sort of mental kaleidoscope, he is proud of his knowledge.

2) I have to agree with a more recent review that he gives out bad grades to students who don't agree with his neo-liberal, conservative, realist position. He dislikes leftist positions and his biases are pretty obvious. I honestly did not find him to be that intelligent or interesting, knowledgeable yes, but not intelligent.

(As a side note, he doesn't like progressives either. A warmonger and sinister CIA type like Bush Sr. is a hero of his.)

These types of men are truly ugly human beings.

It takes someone ugly to take advantage of their position of authority and privilege and use that to manipulate persons who are vulnerable, naive and too young to know any better to either feel better about themselves or for something as base as sexual gratification or attention. In that way they're no different than paedophiles.

And with some of these names, the comparison isn't much of a stretch.

Brawley plays favorites esp. with particular girls. He did during my time at McGill when I was there in the early 00's and he's a total dick to everyone else. Kind of sad that he's still doing it 20 years later.

Brynen and Brawley are both perverted creeps. I walked in on Brynen in his office once and he scrambled to close his browser but I saw enough to see that he was looking at porn. And Brawley is a real creeper, he'll sneak up on you.

Ms Authors,
It seems like you have good heads on your shoulders... but the notion of a married professor "preying" on his students is a cliché that spans throughout academic history. I could see the novelty in it. We all need to see things through and see where it takes us. These professors are Douche McGouches though, and you know it, they know it and some of us Non-McGillians, know it. I can tell you're smart girls.

Er, um...isn't Brawley gay or deeply closeted? Everyone thought he was when I was there. I remember the whole auditorium nervously giggling every time he mentioned his wife during lectures because everyone thought he played for the same team.

Very true given what's happening these days with the Epstein case. But if titans like Epstein and Weinstein can fall and not even Prince Andrew of England or Bill Clinton are Teflon-coated, then there's nothing to stop these assholes from falling either. This website will trail them forever and nothing ever dies on the internet.

What I'm curious about is why did these profs think they were Teflon-coated? Guys like Epstein had money and power and very deep, powerful connections. As far as I can see ,these caved-in chested imbeciles don't even qualify as real alpha males. Absolutely nothing masculine about them or powerful or anything.

This is on a recent McGill reddit thread:

Brawley is a weird professor. In the opinion of 90% of the people in the class, he's a regular prof who puts up dense slides and provides relatively involved commentary on those slides for the duration of the lecture....Yet, he has group of acolytes who think he's the best thing since sliced bread and treat him like god.... i found nothing special about him. neither did my friends in the course.

Mark deserves to have a large rock thrown at this head. Okie white trash with low, low character.

I was at McGill a very long time ago and I had this one professor stare at me inappropriately, make suggestive remarks during office hours, follow me around on campus and do whatever he could to always get in my line of vision or catch my attention whether it was at the library or at the cafeteria.

I heard stories that he had a number of liaisons with his students during my time at McGill, a lot of girls on campus were after him at the time and I think he was just so used to getting his way with female students that when someone said "No" it really offended him. He had a number of his "girls" every semester and I wouldn't be surprised in the least if there are a few dozen former students of his out there who he had those relationships with.

This fellow was/probably still is a very duplicitious person who is very good at winning everyone else in the room over. It's so frustrating to know how fake someone is, yet everyone likes them because they put on a good show.

Not going to name anyone in particular here but knowing what a completely paranoid, self-centred and selfish a-hole he is, he is probably visiting this site every other day to see if anything new about him has gone up, so he'll know this is about him right away.

For a while, thought he was a mole or an informant, that's how much of a complete creep he is, especially the way he scans the lecture room/auditorium and then keeps staring and then following specific targeted girls on campus. He did it to me and he did it to a friend of mine as well. Even going to his office was an ordeal, hard to explain but as a female, you know when someone is scoping you out and looking at you inappropriately, you can feel it and that happened all the time with his guy.
